"Is it just Photoshop?"

Writer's picture: Caroline BenziesCaroline Benzies

That's something I get asked about a lot... or sometimes, someone will just mutter that "it's only Photoshop / a filter" before shuffling away.

No, it really isn't "just Photoshop" or "just a filter" - any more than a painted portrait of someone is "just paint".

The whole point of the images that I create, is to take the ordinary and make it extraordinary - the aim being to make the viewer challenge what they think they know about a place or a subject. Sometimes I use "in camera" techniques, such as double exposure, to change a viewpoint. Sometimes, I use post processing techniques such as blending layers, adding colours and textures. Often, it's a mix of different techniques. I constantly experiment in order to find different ways of using my images (none of which are purely AI generated, I need to add).

There is a LOT of art out there and a lot of photographers. I do not want to be one that just follows the crowd, with the usual shots of landscapes or cityscapes - possibly technically perfect but with little soul or emotion, or someone who tries to recreate what they have seen done elsewhere. I want my work to be recognisable and unique, in order to provoke a reaction in the viewer.

I also make things harder for myself by only selling limited edition print runs! This keeps me on my toes, ensures things are fresh and keeps my art moving forward.

When people 'get' what I do, I am very grateful and it's wonderful to see their reactions when they really look deep into an image.

So if you like and appreciate what I do - THANK YOU!

If you think "It's only Photoshop"... well, just move along now - nothing to see here ...
